Early Signs of Pregnancy

What are the early signs of pregnancy? We have put together a list of possible signs of pregnancy so you know you should go and take a pregnancy test!

As all pregnancies are unique you may have all, some or none of the below symptoms. Some mums to be may notice these changes as early as two weeks! Most of these changes are due to all the changes happening in your body and therefore hormones are normally the reasons for the changes.

One of the major signs for all pregnancies is of course missed period. But you may find you have “spotting” of blood which is normal. This is due to the fertilized egg attaching itself to the uterus lining. This usually lasts 1-2 days but if it gets worse you should seek medical attention.

You may also have period pain which can be confusing but is a less common symptom of pregnancy. You may also have stomach pain which is most likely due to the changing shape of your uterus.

You may notice vaginal discharge which is normal. If you develop Thrush, you will need to get this treated so consult a Pharmacy or a Doctor.

Breast Changes

You may experience swelling and sore breasts. They may feel heavy, tingly and sensitive. You may notice the colour of your nipples darken but this is completely normal and is due to hormonal changes. Nipples may also look bigger and feel sensitive.

Smells & Taste Changes

You may become extra sensitive to smells and even everyday odours such as your morning coffee may make you cringe. Another symptom of pregnancy is nosebleeds. Your palate may change too where you may be put off completely from certain foods you normally love to eat and crave unusual foods.

Some women have also experienced a metal taste.

Digestion Changes

You may encounter bloating, constipation, diarrhea, wind and frequent trips to the toilet. All are completely normal in pregnancy but if you are uncomfortable consult a pharmacy or a doctor.

You may also suffer from heartburn which is linked to a hairy baby!

Mood Change

Another common change is emotional change. You may feel happy, sad, and emotional and not know why! These changes are completely normal.

Headaches & Dizziness

Headaches and dizzy spells can be signs of pregnancy and is due to hormonal changes. Make sure you keep hydrated and sit or lie down.

Feeling Ill

You may feel nauseous and suffer from morning sickness, which can occur at any time of the day. Read our blog on “Coping with Morning Sickness” Here

You may suffer from a runny nose or blocked nose that can result in snoring problems at night.

Feeling more tired and fatigued than usual is also a common pregnancy sign.

Aches & Pains

You may suffer from back pain, hip and leg pains which is all completely normal. Take lots of bed rest and if necessary see a doctor.

If you encounter any of the above you just may be pregnant. Now’s the time to take the fateful pregnancy test! (exciting!)

If the test is negative but you still suspect you may be pregnant, wait a week to take the test again or see a doctor.

If you have had a positive pregnancy test, CONGRATULATIONS!

Next step is to start taking Folic Acid, which is great for mummy and baby. We love this “To Do” List from the NHS to let you know what you need to do next. Get it here. Good luck! 🙂
